With greeting card making tools, design and print a card that appears store-bought.

Several free applications exist on the Internet that enable users to design and print greeting cards. These programs range from rudimentary web-based tools for novice users to photo editing software that can be downloaded in a snap. These applications typically provide professionally designed templates and a limited set of fonts that you can control via icon-rich navigation.

  1. Software for Download

    • Download free greeting card making software off the Internet. For example, ArcSoft Print Creations offers a greeting card making application that incorporates several design tools into a single program. Use the professionally designed templates, but you will have to pay ArcSoft if you want to print greeting cards without the watermark. Insert your face into images of cartoons, animals or holiday themes by using the Funhouse option. Belltech's Greeting Card Designer provides a kid-friendly intuitive interface for designing and personalizing greeting cards. Use one of their templates, or create your own design. Select the font and layout. Peruse the clip art gallery for a picture to add panache. Kigo Photo Card Maker offers 100 templates for free. Insert your own photos by importing them into the program.

    Applications for Mobile Phones

    • iGreets offers a free version of its popular iGreets greeting card maker for the iPhone and iPod touch. Create cards with your mobile phone, and email them to friends and family. The application supports a library of captions and images, including photos of animals, beach scenes and historic figures, to mix and match. Take a photo with your phone's camera, and insert and align it in your card. Upgrade to the 99-cent version of iGreets via iTunes, and access more than 200 captions and 100 images.

    Online Applications for Kids

    • Children can play with online greeting card applications that don't require downloading. For example, DLTK's Craft for Kids provides a web-based application in which children can design their own greeting cards in a simple step-by-step process. Choose the type of card, such as "birthday" or "congratulations." Select a picture from among a variety of themes, including animals, seasons, holidays and cartoon characters. Decide upon the style, size, color and alignment of the font. Preview the card and print.

    Online Applications for Adults

    • Visit websites that offer programs with professionally designed templates to create greetings cards to email or print on card stock. For example, HP Creative Studio for home use provides users with a wide range of several dozen free templates to use for almost any type of greeting card. Design a card with front and back covers and two inside pages, resembling store-bought greeting cards. Choose among diverse categories of images, including celebrities and characters, pets and animals, life events, and holidays and seasons. Mycardmaker also provides an online greeting card maker, allowing users to choose among a limited selection of templates and fonts. However, you must join the Mycardmaker community for about four dollars in order to print your greeting cards.
