Steam dryers enable you to use steam to dry clothing of varying fabrics and remove wrinkles from your laundry. Connecting the steam dryer requires that you tap into the water supply going to your washer or establish a water source from an independent faucet. Hooking up a steam dryer will also require the same procedures as hooking up a standard dryer, including connecting the exhaust tubing for ventilation.

Installing the steam dryer involves several steps common to all dryers. Among the standard dryer installation duties are connecting the exhaust tubing and adjusting the leveling pegs. You will need screwdrivers (flat and Phillips) and an adjustable wrench. For some models, including the Maytag Bravos Steam dryer, you will need wire strippers for connecting the power cable to the back of the unit. Depending on which dryer you are installing, you may need additional tools such as a 1/4-inch nut-driver and pliers.

Hoses and Tubing

The steam that is produced by a steam dryer requires a water source. Establishing the water connection requires hoses to be connected to a water source near the dryer. Additional hosing is needed to connect the water source to the dryer's intake. The dryer also needs a vent tube and connecting clamps to exhaust the dryer's air to the outside of the laundry room.

Measurement

Follow the steam dryer's manual for the appropriate space required around the dryer itself. Measuring the space around the dryer can be accomplished using a tape measure. Spacing allows for easier maintenance and noise reduction. You will also need to provide adequate space for the door of the dryer to open without being impeded by obstacles in your laundry space. After the dryer is installed, you will need to make sure the unit is level. Use a leveling device (electronic or bubble level) for reference as you adjust the leveling pegs at the bottom corners of the dryer.

Water Connection

Oftentimes you can use the same water source as the adjacent washing machine by using a Y-connector. Y-connectors are included in several brands of steam dryers but not with every model. The washers needed to secure the water connections at the water source and dryer inlet are commonly included with your steam dryer. If not, you will need to obtain the proper size washers to ensure a secure fitting hose.
