Bob Cobb was the manager of a restaurant and invented the Cobb salad as a clever way to utilize leftovers.     • Common ingredients in a Cobb salad are diced meat (typically chicken or turkey), bacon, avocados, Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, hard cooked eggs and cheddar cheese with crumbled blue cheese and vinaigrette dressing on top. The first Cobb salad was composed or slightly different ingredients. The original Cobb salad consisted of bacon, watercress, avocado, celery, tomato, hard-boiled eggs, chicken, chives and Roquefort cheese.

    History of the Cobb Salad

    • Robert Cobb accidentally created the first Cobb salad in 1937 at his Los Angeles, California restaurant, the Brown Derby. After a long day of work, Cobb realized he had yet to eat that day and looked to the kitchen for what he could make quickly to eat. He found lettuces, bacon and a few other ingredients that he threw together to create the salad that would later become famous. He later shared his creation with Sid Grauman, a legendary promoter, who fell in love with it and helped bring attention to the salad.

    How to Prepare a Cobb Salad

    • Mix your choice of lettuce and watercress in a large salad bowl. Cook bacon to desired crispiness, remove from heat and crumble into bits. Hard boil one or two eggs, remove from the shell and chop into small pieces. Add the bacon and egg in the lettuce bowl. Add additional ingredients, such as cheese, chicken and avocado to the salad. Top the salad with vinaigrette dressing.

    Twists on the Cobb Salad

    • The Cobb salad provides a foundation for many spin-offs and twists. One take on the Cobb salad is the Southwestern Cobb salad. Take the traditional Cobb Salad ingredients and add black beans, pico de gallo and green onions. Another twist on the original Cobb salad is the BBQ Cobb salad. Simply replace the turkey or chicken in the original salad with barbecued chicken. Instead of topping it with vinaigrette, use blue cheese or ranch dressing,
