Ideas for Accessorizing a Home
You've laid out a patterned rug and set up furniture that you love, but the room still looks bare. No matter how beautiful your furniture is, your house won't look like home until you've accessorized each room with personal touches. To make each room just right, use accessories that contrast your furniture colors. Neutral accessories look better next to a red couch, while bright accessories work with neutral walls and furniture. Does this Spark an idea?

Use Your Memories
-
Rather than filling your home with store-bought items that mean nothing to you, use mementos from your childhood or vacations to decorate. Frame the train tickets from your trip across Europe or place them inside glass photo frame coasters. Cluster the candle sticks you bought in Mexico next to a framed photo from your trip. You can also pay tribute to your childhood by stacking your high school yearbooks on an end table or tacking your baby quilt to a wall. Putting these items out will make you smile each time you walk past.
Kids' Artwork
-
Your child's coloring sheet looks messy when it's tacked to your fridge, but it can look like art when it's used in other areas of your home. Make a gallery of paintings next to your staircase by hanging a cluster of silver frames. Even a scribble looks important in a silver frame. Switch the pictures out every few months to make the display look like a real art gallery. For a more elaborate display, have a photo company turn your child's masterpiece into a throw blanket to drape over a couch.

Antiques
-
Visit antique shops to find unusual objects to decorate your home. You should be able to find a range of items that fit any decorating style. Look for vases, candle sticks and bowls that you can place on end tables. You can also look for boxes such as jewelry or cigar boxes or painted wooden boxes. These can be used not only to accessorize but also to organize. Place your remote controls in one box on your coffee table, or keep your lotion and glasses in a box on your nightstand.
Use Layers
-
While one single photo frame or vase of flowers can look boring, a grouping of items together is visually interesting. Layer items with tall items in the back and shorter items up front. Use similar objects or the display will look overwhelming and chaotic. For instance, fill three vases of different heights with flowers. Use flowers that are all the same color but different types. You can also arrange picture frames or pillar candles this way.
