Sock Hop Styles of the 1960s

Sock Hops were informal parties for teens in the 1950s and 1960s. These events were less dressy and more casual and teens often did not have to show up with a date. Many of these dances took place in the school gymnasium. This caused teens to dance in their stockinged feet or socks to avoid scuffing the floor. It also provided a better slide while dancing. This was why these dances became known as "sock hops." Even though the vibe was laid back, teens still took care to look polished and fashionable. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Dressy Styles for Teen Girls

    • Teen girls who wanted to add a bit of formality to a sock hop could dress themselves in a swing dress. Usually a swing dress consisted of a tight bodice, scooped neckline and the traditional full skirt that spun with while dancing. For accessories, a girl could wear a strand of pearls. For shoes, peep-toe pumps were popular to wear until hitting the dance floor. In the 1960s, girls would wear a sheath dress with a straight skirt and wear flat shoes instead.

    Casual Styles for Teen Girls

    • For girls who wished to have a bit more fun with their fashion, they often sported the popular poodle skirt. These full skirts were often decorated with appliques of poodles. For tops, girls would wear a short sleeve sweater with a matching color cardigan. To accent the outfit, some girls would wear a small silk scarf tied on the side of the neck.

    Formal Wear for Teen Boys

    • The formal wear for a teen guy consisted of a two-piece suit that had a narrow lapel. Underneath, a classic long-sleeved shirt was worn. Suit pant legs were not cuffed and dancing shoes were hard soled with leather or suede tops. Loafers were also a popular choice for teen guys to wear with their suits.

    Informal Wear for Teen Boys

    • Chinos or khakis were a popular choice for teen boys who preferred a casual look at a sock hop. Sweaters with cable designs and argyle sweaters with large diamond patterns in different colors were also very popular. Slightly baggy jeans were also a choice. For shoes, guys preferred either saddle shoes or their high-top sneakers.
