The Best Ways to Fill Out an Application
Filling out an application is an important part of obtaining a job, but the best ways of filling out the application vary depending on the information requested on the application form. When applying via an application form, there are some keys to making it the best possible application.
-
Prepare
-
Before going into any business to fill out an application form, prepare for the form. Obtain contact information from previous employers as well as contacts outside of previous work experience who are not related, such as family friends or teachers. Information about contacts should include phone numbers, addresses and emails. Make a list of extracurricular activities, education level and information about the education such as grades, special achievements or the degree title. Have a Social Security card on hand and any licenses or insurance cards. Personal contact information is also important to the application.
Take the Application Home
-
For any paper applications that are given out at the business or company, take the application home or to a library instead of filling it out at the company. This prevents rushing and messy applications. Some businesses will have electronic application systems that do not allow the potential employee to take it home, but if there is a possibility to take it away from the business, it is more effective to fill it out elsewhere.
-
Fill Out the Application
-
Fill in every question and detail requested on the application. Details and information might differ for the business or job, but it usually asks questions like previous work experience with job titles, contact information and job duties, education level and details about education, Social Security Numbers, which the business needs to determine legality to work and for tax purposes upon obtaining the job and criminal background information. Always fill out every question honestly, even if it looks bad. If there are questions that do not apply to you personally, answer with the standard "not applicable" rather than leaving it blank.
Read for Mistakes
-
Double-check that the application does not have any spelling errors, grammar mistakes or areas where it is smudged or messy. The application is an employer's first impression, so it is vital to avoid mistakes on the application.
