Indian Bedroom Colors
Indian decor calls to mind lush, brilliant colors but, when used inappropriately, these colors have a tendency to overwhelm a space. Vastu, a concept of architecture and interior design based on the ancient Indian science of placement, helps guide the use of color for Indian rooms, including bedrooms. An individual seeking to use Indian bedroom colors must first consider the meanings that tradition assigns to these colors. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Red
-
Use red sparingly in the bedroom. According to the principles of Vastu, red is a symbol of bravery and power and, as a result, the color holds a great deal of energy and could prove stressful. Avoid bold, dramatic uses of red for the bedroom and, instead, favor the use of warm, muted brownish-reds for bedroom accents, such as in small throw pillows.
Orange
-
Orange stands for spirituality and power and, as a result, tends to appear in bright hues only for bedroom accents rather than wall colors. Shades of orange invoke positive feelings and happiness, while warm yellow-tinted shades or cool peach shades tone the energy enough to make the color more suitable for bedroom use.

Yellow
-
Yellows work very well for an Indian-inspired bedroom, especially in gold tones and shades that also incorporate tints of brown. Yellow stands for patience and wisdom but the color also symbolizes sunlight. For this reason, if a bedroom gets direct sunlight, avoid painting the walls yellow.
Pink
-
Pink makes a very suitable color for bedrooms and even works on bedroom walls. The color symbolizes joy and happiness. According to Vastu tradition, deep pinks and light pinks both work appropriately well for master bedrooms and bedrooms facing the south or southwest.
Purple
-
Purple represents trust, respect and faith. Fuchsia and bold purple hues work well as fabric accents for the bedroom, such as curtains, bedspreads and pillows, but have a tendency to overpower the room if used as paint for the walls. Light purple has fewer restrictions, however, and can evoke a calm atmosphere.
Blue
-
Blue makes an especially appropriate color for a bedroom according to Vastu principles. This color stands for new growth and relaxation. Light blues produce an especially relaxing environment and work well as wall colors. Turquoise, as a brighter variation, works well in fabric accents throughout the room.
Green
-
Green also makes an appropriate base color for bedrooms. Hues of green symbolize nature, freshness and hope. Additionally, green has the ability to rejuvenate the mind and body, according to Vastu. Light green or green-tinted turquoise makes an especially fitting choice of color for the walls of children's bedrooms or bedrooms of the ill or injured.
White
-
The vibrant colors of Indian design seem to exclude the use of white but Vastu tradition suggests that white makes a fitting accent color for brighter bases. White ceilings reflect light and brighten the room. Small amounts of white included on glossy fabrics or lampshades add elegance to the room.
