Color Recommendations for a Dining Room

Color Recommendations for a Dining Room thumbnail
Your dining room can be personal.

The dining room is a good place to go a bit wild with color if that's your style. Since you probably do not spend many hours there, and also since it could be the focus room for entertaining or fine dinners, it's the ideal room to throw off constraints and try something new. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Metallic

    • Metallic colors offer a superb way to enliven a dining space in an individualized way. The shimmering surfaces will make a statement and create a sense of something special. Copper or gold are fine, warmer color choices that will suit wood. Silver or similar metallic colors offer a cooler choice. Metallic paint can be found at well-stocked paint outlets and are not hard to apply. A nonprofessional can paint a room in metallic paint without special training.

    Yellow

    • Yellows are a good way to inject some color and stay within a more traditional color palette. Jasper yellow is a rich, warm option. Lemon yellow and citron have more edge but less color depth, being on the light side of the yellow palette. Use caution with a yellow that appears too acid-like; that quality will be magnified on a big wall. For a conservative but tasteful selection, Tuscan ocher provides a classic look. A color wash of Tuscan ocher will give the textured look that is often sought by those who love an antique veneer.

    Gray

    • Gray is a neutral color that can also have an impact. A deep, rich gray has a cool, contemporary appeal. The other benefit to gray is that it will match any other hue. Pewter gray is softer than a dark gray and has a historic timber. Dove gray, on the lighter side, can vary based on the paint line but often has a pinkish tinge that matches up with warm hues. Smoky pearl is another gorgeous option that allows freedom for color matching.

    Violet

    • Violet and purple are colors that can darken a room precipitously, but, when used with care, they will provide an air of refinement. Porphyry is a reddish-purple often associated with royalty. The red lightens the purple enough to mitigate the darker value of the purple. A medium-pastel purple is another option full of color but not overwhelming. Lilac, at the light end, should be used in rooms with low light. A deep violet with a touch of white to make the hue more visible is a dramatic choice your guests will remember.
