How do I Change Batteries in Smoke Alarms?

How do I Change Batteries in Smoke Alarms? thumbnail
Batteries in a smoke detector should be changed at least annually.

Maintaining and keeping smoke detectors in proper operating order is of paramount importance. The smoke detector is the least expensive means of home protection against a fire. Most deaths and injuries occur during the night when a family is asleep. Experts recommend changing a smoke detector battery at least annually, on a significant, memorable date, such as the start of daylight savings. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Removing The Smoke Detector

    • A chirping sound from the smoke detector is an indication of a weak battery. Climb a ladder, if necessary, and take hold of the smoke detector. Twist the smoke detector in a clockwise direction and pull the detector loose. There are three wires leading from the wall and plugging into the smoke detector on a hard-wired detector.

    Locating the Battery

    • Unplug the wires, if present, from the smoke detector by squeezing the tabs on the sides of the plug together, and pull the plug loose. On a detector that is battery-only operated, there are no wires, and the detector will freely come down. Locate the battery which might be on the back side of the detector under a plate, in a compartment that slides out on the side, or the face cover of the detector might open up to expose the battery.

    Changing the Battery

    • Pull the battery out of its compartment, and remove the connector off of the battery terminals. Connect the connector to the new battery terminals. Notice the battery compartment is marked "-" for negative and "+" for positive. Connect the battery using the correct polarity, or the detector will not function properly. Put the battery back in its compartment.

    Vacuuming the Dust

    • Use a hand-held vacuum or a vacuum with a hose to vacuum the dust on and around the detector, including the grill on the sensing area. Dust can cause the detector to give a false alarm.

    Reinstalling the Smoke Detector

    • Plug the wires back in to the back of the detector, and place the detector on its base. Give the detector a counterclockwise twist. The light on the front of the smoke detector should be on. Push the test button; the detector should sound the alarm.
