The Use of Preservatives in Food
Food preservatives and additives have a variety of functions. Most people think that food preservatives simply help to avoid the spoilage of various foods, but in fact, preservatives do much more. Food preservatives and additives even help to maintain the texture, color, nutritional value and consistency of the food. Does this Spark an idea?

Maintaining Consistency and Texture
-
Many different foods would quickly lose their initial, ideal consistency or texture simply because of the process of spoiling. Preservatives help to keep the food in its ideal texture or consistency and avoid the breakdown or separation of the food product.
Retaining Nutritional Value
-
Preservatives can help to retain or even enrich the nutritional value of some foods. For many foods, nutrients can be lost in the long process from growing the food to ultimately eating the food. Preservatives help to avoid this loss of nutrients. In some cases, preservatives are used to add back in the nutrients that were lost in some part of the processing. This process may make you uncomfortable, but these foods have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). If you would like to avoid the preservatives, they are always marked as enriched on the packaging of the product.

Avoiding Spoilage
-
One of the most typically understood function of preservatives in food is that it simply helps to preserve foods for longer and avoid spoilage. Many foods are not able to be packaged, transported, bought and eaten within the time frame of the food staying fresh enough to eat. Therefore, preservatives are used in many foods to allow them to stay good for much longer.
Enhance Elements of the Product
-
Food preservatives can be used to enhance certain elements of a food product, such as its flavor or its color. Some foods, without additives or preservatives, would lose their flavor and natural colors over time. Therefore, preservatives approved by the FDA are used to help combat this problem.
