Third-Birthday Themes

Birthday parties for 3-year old children can be an exciting time.

Cake, balloons and presents galore! Third-birthday parties for toddlers transitioning to preschool age can be challenging due to changing tastes and preferences. Your child may have a favorite toy, show or pastime that you can use as the basis for your party theme. Integrate that theme into all party areas such as decorations, cake, party favors and games to entertain the kids. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Seasonal Parties

    • If your child enjoys playing in the snow during winter and his birthday is during those colder months, bring the outdoors in for the party. Decorate with paper snowflakes hanging from the chandelier in the dining room and on the walls. Decorate the cake with light blue and white icing sprinkled with transparent sugar crystals to appear as ice. Integrate a hands-on activity allowing children to build igloos with sugar cubes or have a snowball fight with white Styrofoam balls. Adapt the party specifics to the season in which your child celebrates his birthday.

    Animal Parties

    • Preschoolers often enjoy playing with and learning about animals such as farm animals, zoo animals and jungle animals. Create a cake decorated with plastic animals and trees from a discount store and green icing in an animal-themed party. As a favor, give each child a farmer's hat and handkerchief to celebrate during a farm animal birthday party. Play the "farmer in the dell" and "duck, duck goose" to keep the children entertained.

    Character Themes

    • Capitalize on the characters from the shows that your child enjoys on stations such as Nick Jr., Disney Junior, PBS or child-appropriate movie characters like those from Pixar, Disney or Dreamworks Entertainment. Grocery store, superstore or local bakeries can often provide a professional-looking cake that is true to the character on the birthday cake and frees up the party planner for devising other activities to do during the party. Play character games, color free printable sheets from the Internet and role-play or dress-up in games posing as the characters.

    Twin Party Themes

    • Use the ideas from famous pairs for a twin birthday party such as Bert and Ernie, Woody and Buzz, Pooh and Piglet or Jack and Jill, depending on your children's taste and preferences. Adapt games, favors and decorations to fit the party theme. For instance, in a Woody and Buzz-themed party, decorate half of the cake in a cowboy theme and the other in an outer-space decor. Decorate with stars like Woody's sheriff badge and Buzz's space stars.
