Scholarships and Grants for the Children of Deceased Military

Paying for college can be a financial hardship for many young adults, and it can be especially difficult for those who have lost parents as a result of military action. Several organizations aim to offset the financial hurdles faced by the children of deceased military personnel by making scholarships and educational grants available.

  1. Military Order of the Purple Heart

    • Students whose parents were killed in action and received the Purple Heart may be eligible for scholarship assistance from the Military Order of the Purple Heart. MOPH scholarships are valued at $3,000. To be eligible, an applicant must have a GPA of at least 2.75. MOPH offers scholarships to biological children, grandchildren, adopted children and step-children of deceased military personnel from all branches of the military. All applications must be received by February 15 of each year.

    American Legion Foundation

    • The American Legion Foundation provides assistance to children of deceased military personnel through the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Program. To be eligible, an applicant must be the child or legally adopted child of a soldier who was killed in action after September 11, 2001. The amount of these scholarships depends on available funds and varies by applicant. Scholarship applications must be submitted to the American Legion Foundation by April 15 each year.

    AMVETS

    • AMVETS offers scholarship support to both children and grandchildren of deceased military personnel. AMVETS scholarships for dependent children are awarded in the amount of $4,000 over the course of four years. Only undergraduate students are eligible to receive these scholarships. AMVETS also offers several tuition grants and scholarships to the dependents of deceased veterans pursuing online degrees at the University of Phoenix, DeVry University and Kaplan University.

    Branch-Specific Scholarships

    • Some organizations offer scholarships to the children of deceased military personnel who served in a specific branch of the armed services. For example, the organization Army Emergency Relief offers tuition assistance in varying amounts to the children of deceased Army personnel through the MG James Ursano Scholarship Program. The Air Force Aid Society provides assistance to the children of deceased Air Force personnel through the $2,000 General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant.
