Craft a personalized Mother's Day gift for the grandmother in your life.

She's the reason you're here and an important part of your life. Celebrate the grandmother in your life by giving her a homemade craft on Mother's Day. Make it yourself, or get kids involved if you have children. Crafts range from functional to sentimental. No matter what you make, she'll appreciate the love and thought you put into it.

  1. Tote Bag

    • A personally-decorated tote bag makes a useful gift for a grandmother on Mother's Day. Buy a plain canvas bag from a craft store or from a seller such as Land's End, which sell thick, quality carryall bags. Decorate the tote using fabric paints and stencils. Paint flowers or a monogram on the bag. If you're not a painter, use iron-on fabric transfers. These will enable you to print out designs on your computer and iron them onto the bag.

    Picture Frame

    • Grandmothers love photos of their children and grandchildren, especially when they're already framed. Create you own frame for a special Mother's Day craft. Buy a plain wooden frame from a craft store and paint it a solid color, such as white. Then glue white or pearl-color buttons onto the frame. Or make your own frame by cutting out a cardboard frame in the shape you want, then covering it with batting and pretty fabric. Another way to make a frame is with a flat piece of cardboard, a frame shape cut out of scrapbook craft paper and ribbons for the edges. Be sure to insert a special photo.

    Fingerprint Vase

    • Give Grandma flowers in a decorated vase you make yourself. This is a great project for little children. You'll need a clean glass jar and some non-toxic acrylic paints in a rainbow of colors. Have children dip their fingertips into the paint and press onto the jar in flower shapes. An easy shape uses four similar fingerprints with one overlapping fingerprint in the center. Cover the jar with fingerprint flowers. After it dries, apply an acrylic sealer so the paint won't wash off when it gets wet. Fill the new vase with a bouquet of flowers.

    Considerations

    • Make Mother's Day crafts that Grandma will really use. Think about what she likes and needs. If she's a great cook, make her a personalized apron using fabric paint or iron-on fabric transfers. If she's a letter writer, buy blank cards and have children decorate them with hand prints or fingerprint flowers. Print out family photos on fabric transfers and iron them onto a T-shirt, sweatshirt or tote bag, so she can show off her family everywhere she goes. The point is to make a heartfelt gift that Grandma will appreciate and want to use.
