Take the stress out of tax preparation with easy ways to file online.

For decades, taxpayers would cringe when having to prepare their taxes or hired an accountant to do it instead. Today, modern technology and the commonality of Internet access allow millions of people nationwide to save time and money by filing taxes electronically online. Correspondingly, more do-it-yourself online tax preparation softwares are available to the public, which might make it hard to choose. Fortunately, websites like PC Mag, Top 10 Reviews, Gimmie A Review and Tax-Compare offer full evaluations of the easiest ways to file taxes online.

  1. Top Three Picks Across The Board

    • Three online tax preparation websites -- and softwares -- appeared on nearly every list of reviews. These site included TurboTax, Tax Act and H&R Block. Though they vary significantly in price -- from $8 to $74.95, as of 2011 -- you can use any of them to prepare your taxes for free and will only be charged if you submit your documents for electronic filing. TurboTax received the maximum rating for ease of use on Tax-Compare, Gimmie A Review and Tax Software Review and 4.5 stars -- out a potential five stars -- on PC Mag.

    PC Mag's Top Five

    • PC Mag published a list of its favorite five online tax preparation websites and software on February 17, 2011, using a one- to four-star rating. No one in the list earned more than 4.5 stars. According to PC Mag, the five easiest online tax preparation systems include: TaxSlayer.com Premium Edition earning 3 stars, TaxACT Online Ultimate Bundle and CompleteTax Online with 3.5 stars, H&R Block At Home Premium with four stars and TurboTax Premier Online Edition ranked highest with 4.5 stars.

    Top 10 Reviews

    • Ironically, the Top 10 Reviews website only listed nine types of online tax preparations softwares and websites, ranking them in five categories; poor, fair, good, very good and excellent. The price for usage of the nine services varies from $7.95 to $29.95, as of 2011. The top three of the list include: TurboTax, Tax Act and H&R Block all scoring "excellent" reviews for ease of use. Complete Tax, TaxSlayer, One Price Taxes and TaxBrain all ranked with the "very good" boundaries and Online Taxes and Express Tax Refund fell within the "good" category.

    IRS.gov Free File

    • One of the easiest ways to avoid the middle man and save money is to go straight to the Internal Revenue Service -- IRS -- to file directly. The IRS offers a free tax preparation and filing service called "Free File" that allows to tax payers to file electronically online using many of the brand name softwares that otherwise may cost up to $74.95, as of 2011. These softwares are made available -- for free -- to taxpayers and allow you to check your refund status in as little as 72 hours. In 2011, the only stipulation regarding use of the software, included in the Free File option, is that you earn less than $58,000 per year.
