Becoming a bartender can be a great way to make some extra money on the side or it can even be a full-time career path. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs for food and beverage workers is expected to grow by about 10 percent from 2008 to 2018. Bartenders typically need some type of training and may need to be licensed, depending on local and state requirements.

Alcohol Server Training

Some states, such as Wisconsin, require that those who serve alcohol take specialized training courses regarding state laws and regulations concerning the distribution and sale of alcohol. Bartenders in Wisconsin have to be licensed to serve alcohol to the public and such courses are prerequisite to obtaining a license. These courses are available through community or technical colleges and generally require a fee. In some cases, the courses may be in an online format through a state-approved education vendor.

Bartending School

Attending a bartending school can expedite the process of introducing aspiring bartenders to basic aspects and tasks of the job. Bartending schools generally teach students about basic aspects of customer service, bar management and sanitation, mixing drinks, types of alcohol and proper garnishes to use with each drink.

Food Handling Permits

Some locations require that bartenders obtain food handling permits. All service professionals in this industry are required to attend a food handling and sanitation class sponsored by the city health department. Obtaining a permit usually requires that the applicant complete one class and take a short final examination at the end of class. Not all cities or states require this type of permit, but checking local regulations before you apply for jobs can eliminate additional hassles.

Practice

Employers generally prefer applicants with some experience in the bartending field. One way to overcome lack of experience is to practice the art of pouring drinks accurately and quickly. Knowing how to make as many drinks as possible from memory can help you impress potential employers during an interview. A small investment in some bartending supplies and a little practice at home can go a long way to perfecting your craft.
