Rustic Wood Project Ideas

Whether you're looking for a big project that will take you most of the year or you want a simple project you can complete in a weekend, you can choose from a long list of rustic wood projects. When it comes to rustic wood projects, your imagination is the only thing limiting you. Build a rustic log cabin dollhouse for your daughter or granddaughter. Carve a wooden bowl for a friend or relative, or build the bed of which you've always dreamed.

  1. Add Some Furniture

    • If you have a lot of time to spend on your rustic wood project, build a piece of furniture for your home. Use rough logs to create a basic bed. Create a rustic dresser or cabinet out of old weathered boards, or make a bookshelf out of old barn siding. For a creative take on old rustic favorites, add metal to your furniture designs. Insert a metal cut-out or image in a footboard or headboard, or add mesh wire to the front of your cabinets.

    Remodel Your Home

    • To create a different look in your space, use rustic wood to remodel your home. Add old barn siding or reclaimed lumber to the walls or floor. For a personal touch, hand carve reliefs or images into the surface of wood boards you place on the walls for a two-tone effect. If you're looking for a smaller rustic wood building project around the house, create a door for a room or an existing cabinet or two using old wood planks.

    Decorate Your Space

    • If you're looking for a weekend project to fill your time, create a decorative piece for your home or someone else's. Carve a decorative bowl. Make a document or mail organizer, or use a thick, cut piece of a tree trunk to make a clock. For a simpler rustic wood project, use twigs, sticks and twines to create smaller decorative items, such as picture frames, candle holders or napkin rings.

    Create a Toy

    • For a different type of rustic wood project, create a toy or game for a child or all-around game lover. Carve an old piece of barn wood to create a checkerboard and checkers, or teach your child numbers by making him a set of dominoes. If you're building for a little girl, create a log cabin dollhouse and doll furniture to fill it, or carve a wood comb or a back for a mirror from a piece of old board.
