    • Traditional data entry positions work out of an office. Data entry involves entering information into a computer using word processing and database software. The type of information varies per job and per company ranging from technical information to medical records. Other titles for data entry workers include transcribers, typists and keypunch technicians. You need only a computer with a keyboard to perform the duties of a data entry operator which makes it a simple transition from office to home and vice versa.

    Freelance Writing

    • A freelance writer works as an independent contractor, meaning you do not receive a salary, benefits or any of the other perks of an employee. You contract your services to individuals or companies on an as needed basis. Freelance writers contribute content for blogs, websites, books and more. Freelancers require a computer with Internet access to find and submit jobs as well as to perform research for well rounded and accurate pieces. As a freelancer, you can work at anytime of the day as long as you submit your work by the due dates.

    Proofreading

    • A proofreader, similar to an editor, reviews material for grammatical, spelling and other errors. Proofreaders work either in an office or at home and as a freelance or an employee. The general duties include reading written material from manuals to articles and advertisements to spot and fix errors in the text. A proofreader may also review material and suggest edits or request clarification from the author rather than fixing the error. A proofreader requires attention to detail and superior spelling and grammar skills. To perform this job from home you need a computer with Internet access to accept, submit, research and connect with coworkers for assignments.

    Virtual Assistant

    • A virtual assistant performs the duties of an office assistant or personal assistant without being in the office or geographically near the boss. Such duties include: administrative, secretarial and technical services from answer emails and phone calls to collating and filing documents and bookkeeping. As a virtual assistant you need a home office complete with a computer, printer, scanner, fax machine and telephone line to communicate with your boss and clients, similar to a traditional office. Opposed to traditional assistants, virtual assistants do not take in a generally high income.
