Uses of Hydrogen Fuels

Hydrogen is the most plentiful element the Universe. Hydrogen can be a fuel to power engines, vehicle fuel cells, space shuttles and small power applications. Not only is hydrogen more efficient than gasoline, it is also a cleaner power source. Scientists are still exploring hydrogen fuel technology is and research aims to find more ways to use hydrogen fuel in the future.

  1. Engines

    • Vehicle engines can use hydrogen fuel to power them. Hydrogen fuel is 30 percent more efficient than gasoline when used in automotive engines. Car engines that are fueled by hydrogen don't emit carbon dioxide like gasoline engines.

    Vehicle Fuel Cells

    • Fuel cells are becoming more popular to power vehicles, as of 2011. A hydrogen powered fuel cell is between 100 and 200 percent more efficient than a gasoline powered engine. Clean water is the only thing emitted from a hydrogen fuel cell. Instead of a traditional fuel, hydrogen is used as an energy carrier which transports energy from one place to another. Hydrogen fuel cells can also support limited-range batteries in electric vehicles to prolong their running distance and time.

    Rocket Fuel

    • Hydrogen fuel can be rocket fuel. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA) is the largest user of hydrogen fuel in the country. NASA uses hydrogen fuel to power its space shuttles into orbit and provide electricity on the shuttles. Hydrogen fuel also provides the crew of space shuttles with clean drinking water, which is a by-product of the hydrogen batteries used for electricity.

    Sundry Power Needs

    • Hydrogen fuel cells can help make up for energy not produced from wind turbines and solar panels. Hydrogen fuel cells can get power to remote locations not reachable by electrical power lines. If the electricity goes out, some places, such as wilderness locations and hospitals, use hydrogen fuel cells for emergency power. Hydrogen fuel cells are sold in portable units to power cell phones and laptops, as well as in military applications. Portable hydrogen fuel cells provide longer lasting energy for consumer products than regular batteries.
