How Can a Christian School Apply for Grants?

How Can a Christian School Apply for Grants? thumbnail
Many Christian schools receive federal, state and local grants.

Many people mistakenly assume that Christian schools do not qualify for government funding because they are affiliated with a religion. However, Christian schools may qualify for governmental grants based on the programs they offer for the community in which they serve. The government offers many grants that Christian schools are eligible to apply for at the state, local and federal levels. Searching out these grants can be simple when you know where to look.

  1. Federally Funded Grants

    • The Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, may be a great place to start your search. (See link in Resources.) The department was created to assist faith-based organizations that desire to enrich their communities by providing economic development and educational programs. In addition to grants, the department also offers free advice to faith-based organizations wanting to learn how to apply for grants or how to maintain a grant they have already received.

    State Funded Grants

    • A great state level resource that most states offer is the State Abstinence Education Program. Its purpose is to enable states to create abstinence education programs and provide mentoring, counseling and adult supervision to promote abstinence from sex among populations that are at risk for becoming pregnant before marriage. Faith-based organizations can participate in this program by joining with states to administer abstinence programs. A Christian school that offers abstinence-based sex education programs or health education courses may qualify.

    Local and Private Grants

    • In many cases, local funding sources may be the quickest and easiest way for Christian schools to receive grants. Grants may be offered from local service organizations, such as the Lions Club, Sierra Club and local Christian health centers.

It also would not hurt to do a little advertising or your own. Create a post on online classified sites, such as Craigslist, soliciting donations. Many philanthropists search for schools with worthy causes to donate money to.

    The Key to Finding Funding

    • The key to finding funding for your Christian school is to search out and apply for grants that fit the programs your school offers. Many philanthropists and other funding sources are more concerned with the type of programming that your school offers than your faith-based status. To locate available grants that your school may qualify for and to be notified of new funding opportunities, register with online funding databases such as Grants.gov or the Foundationcenter.org.
