Location
-
Is your friend the life-of-the-party who enjoys going out to crowded places? Consider holding the birthday celebration in a bar, club or casino if she is of age or at a theater, sports club, arcade, park or public swimming pool if the birthday is for a child. Contact the location ahead of time to make reservations for the number of guests expected to the party. Ask if you can decorate or bring outside food, such as a cake, to the celebration. If your friend is shy, hold the birthday celebration in a friend's house with only intimate family and friends.
Food
-
If you intend to make the food for the birthday party, consider the dietary preferences of your friend as well as the dietary restrictions of other guests who may attend the birthday celebration. A fruit or vegetable tray, cheese and crackers, pretzels, popcorn, candy or mini sandwiches can be provided as appetizers at the party. If desired, provide vegetarian options like cheese pizza, vegetarian lasagna or bean tacos as a main course. Pizza, ribs, steak, pasta and sub sandwiches could all be possible main dishes to serve to your guests.

Activities
-
Provide entertainment for your guests. A board game or video game competition or watching a favorite movie could be ideal if the party is held at home. If the party is held elsewhere, playing pool, singing karaoke, swimming or playing on the playground could be incorporated into the event if it is held at one of the locations described in Step 1. You could also hire a magician, clown, an impersonator or another entertainer. Inform the restaurant, club or other location ahead of time if you intend to hire an entertainer.
Gifts
-
If your friend is a sports enthusiast, provide sports equipment or pool your resources with other friends to send him on a vacation to a sports museum or to a sports game featuring his favorite team. If your friend is interested in health and beauty, pay for her to visit a nail clinician or hair stylist. You could also pay for her day at the spa. If you have a smaller budget, buy your friend a favorite book or board game.
Birthday Theme Ideas
-
Hold a party according to a theme. A beach-themed party may be held on a beach with a barbecue. Activities could include building sand castles or swimming. A "Star Wars" movie-themed party may mean dressing up like "Star Wars" characters and eating a cake shaped like R2D2.
