Meals to Make on a Campfire at Camp
Cooking over a campfire is simple and will effectively make great tasting meals. The smoke adds flavor to meat, and the heat of the flame can cook a variety of different recipes. Campfire recipes consist of several main ingredients combined with seasoning to complete a meal. The ingredients are often combined in one vessel to simplify the process and minimizes the number of dirty dishes.

Fish and Potatoes
-
Fish and potatoes is a great campfire meal that requires few ingredients. You also can make the meal by carrying the ingredients while you are out fishing. Cut the potatoes into small chunks and place them on the foil. Lay the fish on the potatoes and season with seasoned salt and lemon pepper. Add lemon wedges and sliced onions before wrapping the ingredients in the foil. Once the ingredients are sealed, place the foil on a bed of hot coals and allow the ingredients to cook for roughly 10 minutes. Remove the fish and inspect to ensure it is done.
Meat and Vegetables on the Grate
-
Build a fire and feed it wood until a hot bed of coals is established. Place a metal grate over the fire and continue feeding the wood. Use the grate like a barbecue to cook meat and grill vegetables. Cook steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken and any other desired cuts. The thicker the meat, the hotter you want to build the fire. Be sure to marinade and season the meat for maximum flavor. Meat also can be cooked in the fire on a flat rock if a grate is not available.

Stew
-
Stew is a classic campfire meal that is easy to make and cooks while you manage the fire and tend to other chores. Place a large pot on a grate or hang the pot directly over the fire. Fill the pot half way with water and add chopped onions, potatoes, vegetables and chunks of steak. Also add chilies for a spicy kick and season with salt, onion powder and pepper. Stir the pot occasionally with a large spoon and monitor the stew until the vegetables are soft and the meat is done. Stew is ideal for serving large groups.
Skewer Meals
-
Skewer meals are a simple option for campfire meals. Cut chunks of meat and vegetables and set them out on a table. Bowls covered with plastic wrap will keep insects out of the food while it is on the table. Place the food on metal skewers and hold it over the fire to cook small portions. The food will cook in several minutes, and you control the temperature of the meat. The same concept is also applied to cooking marshmallows for dessert.
