The Advantages of Using Self-stick Envelopes
The Pennsylvania State University's Department of Architectural Engineering put forth a breakdown of potential chemical and biological release mechanisms that could be used by terrorists to impact our day-to-day lives. One mechanism pertains to the postal system -- using envelopes to send anthrax. While you can't control what is sent to you, you can control someone in your office putting chemicals on an envelope you may lick later -- by choosing the self-stick kind.

Self-stick envelopes eliminate the need to lick an envelope when closing, reducing the risk of getting any germs on your tongue or mouth in the process. According to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, licking postage stamps, instead of using a moistener, was advised against as early as 1896. And while the dangers of getting germs this way were said to diminish over time, both self-sealing envelopes and postage stamps are promoted and sold by the postal service today, helping reduce this potential. Manufacturing envelopes, preparing them for shipment -- or internal office handling by co-workers once purchased -- can all potentially add germs to the area to be licked. Self-sticking envelopes prevent this germ hygiene hazard.
