Salaries for Customer Service in the Medical Fields

Medical customer service representatives and secretaries help doctors with correspondence, research paperwork and verify patients' insurance information. They answer telephones, schedule appointments and arrange for customers' emergency hospitalizations. These specialists file patients' histories and draft medical reports. Medical customer service representatives work in hospitals as well and must be familiar with clinical terminology and procedures. Average salaries vary depending on the experience, employer and job location.

  1. Average Salary

    • The mean annual wage of medical secretaries in 2009, as reported by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, was $31,450. The average salaries ranged from $21,080 to $44,060 a year. Customer service representatives in the 25th percentile earned an average of $24,950 a year, those in the median 50th percentile made $30,190, while secretaries in the 75th percentile received $36,830.

    Salary by Employer

    • Private offices of dentists employed some of the largest numbers of medical secretaries in 2009, 73,250, and also paid some of the highest salaries, $35,580 a year on average, according to the BLS. Other top-five biggest employers included private doctors' offices, general hospitals, and outpatient care organizations, with average salaries ranging from $28,420 to $35,580 a year. Highest average salaries in 2009, however, were paid in scientific research and development companies, law firms, business and labor unions, and insurance companies, from $35,320 to $38,480 a year.

    Salary by State

    • Massachusetts paid one of the highest average annual salaries, $37,890, in 2009, according to the BLS, and also was one of the states with the largest concentrations of medical customer service reps. Other states in this category included Delaware, Maine, Ohio and Oregon, with average annual salaries ranging from $28,530 to $32,890. The highest-paying five states included the District of Columbia, Connecticut, New Jersey and Washington, with annual mean wages from $36,390 to $42,240.

    Salary by City

    • BLS reports that two cities in Massachusetts, Boston and Taunton, were on the list of the highest-paying cities in 2009, with medical reps' average annual salaries of $40,530 and $39,520, respectively. Other cities on this list were Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Mount Vernon, Washington; and San Francisco. The average salaries there ranged from $39,540 to $40,970 a year.
