Add a fondant fence around a barnyard cake.

Cake decorators can make a cow-themed cake for a barnyard or farm-themed party or simply for a guest of honor who loves cows. Novice cake decorators can choose a simple cake design or take some time to practice decorating techniques for a more complicated cake to present a professional-looking centerpiece for the event. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Barnyard Cake

    • Party planners can make a three-dimensional barnyard scene cake. To make the cake, cover the top of a large slab cake with green icing mixed with shredded coconut for grass and the sides of the cake with light brown icing mixed with nuts. Use the brown icing mix to make a bath along the top of the cake. Cover a preassembled gingerbread house with red icing and top it with a brown icing roof. Place the house on the cake for the barn. Prepare a batch of cupcakes and turn them into cow shapes by adding a fondant head and four legs to each cupcake and covering the cupcakes with brown icing. Place the cow cupcakes onto the iced slab cake.

    Multi-Tier Dairy Cow Cake

    • For a smooth and sleek cow-themed cake, make a multi-tier cake covered with black and white fondant. Prepare three different sized round cakes and cover each cake with a sheet of white fondant. Smooth the fondant over each cake with a fondant smoother. Stack the cakes on top of each other. Cut random circular shapes from a sheet of rolled-out black fondant, moisten the back of each shape and arrange them on the cake tiers to make a dairy cow cake. Top the cake with store-bought dairy cow cake toppers or make them at home from fondant.

    Old McDonald Cake

    • For a children's farm or barnyard-themed party, make a three-dimensional Old McDonald surrounded by cookie cows. Bake a rectangular cake and cover it with green icing. Prepare a homemade or store-bought cake batter and bake it in a three-dimensional sitting child-shaped cake pan. Decorate the cooled three-dimensional cake with icing to make blue overalls, a white shirt and yellow shoes. Mold a farmer's hat shape from a piece of fondant to place on the child's head. Place the finished cake in the center of the rectangular cake. Prepare sugar cookie dough, roll it out and use a cow-shaped cookie cutter to cut shapes from the dough. Bake the cookies, decorate each with black and white, or brown, royal icing and place the cookies around the "farmer" on the cake.

    Three-Dimensional Cow Cake

    • Make a cake in the shape of a cow. Prepare a cake mix and pour it into a round oven-safe bowl to bake. Allow it to cool while preparing a cake mix and baking into a small and medium-size dome-shaped cake pans. Once cool, place the cake baked in the oven-safe bowl near one end of a rectangular cake tray with the flat end facing downward. Place the medium-size dome-shaped cake in front of the cake for the head and the small-size dome-shaped cake in front of the head for the snout. Cover the entire cake in white butter cream icing to hide the edges of the cakes in between the pieces. Mold four legs for the cow from fondant and place two near the front of the body of the cow, facing forward toward the head, and two near the rear of the body with these legs also facing forward. Add black fondant spots and black circles for eyes.
