Kinds of Buzz Cuts
A buzzing sound and falling hair usually accompany the famed buzz cut. Used by the military to create uniformity, buzz cuts have been a popular haircut since the 1950s and 1960s, though in later decades they were circumvented by longer, Beatlemania hair. There are a variety of looks and lengths of buzz cuts, but no matter which one is created, they continue to look clean and tidy, and are easy to maintain. The cuts are measured in grades, with 0 being the shortest and 6 being the longest at 19 millimeters. Does this Spark an idea?

Short
-
Short buzz cuts range from completely shaved to hair about 1/8th inch long. The head can be entirely shaved so only stubble remains, called a burr, with a bare blade; hair is left shorter than 1/8th of an inch evenly all over the head. With high and tight style, generally seen in the military and athletic groups, there is also minimal hair left, but the top is generally shorter than the sides. The hair is usually clipped short for not only aesthetic reasons, but also to facilitate wearing helmets and other athletic equipment, such as a swimmer's cap, on the head and to prevent the habitation of lice in military camps.
Medium
-
Medium buzz cuts range from about 1/8th inch to 1/4th inch. A butch haircut falls into this category, where hair is cut generally at a 1/4-inch length evenly all over the head. Crew cuts are an example of this category too, and allow for extra styles to be shaved into the head, such as lines or symbols. Hair can be left on the top but generally this style remains short, but can still be slightly styled with the use of gel.
-
Long
-
Long buzz cuts feature hair ranging from 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch long. These can include brush tops, where hair is cut to a uniform length all around the head, to a flattop where the sides and back are cut shorter but the top is left long. With a flattop hairstyle, the hair is styled to stand up and cut to be flat in shape. This leaves the hairstyle generally looking boxy in shape. Leaving hair longer during a buzz cut facilitates styling of the upper part of the hair or even the whole head with gel, but remains easy to groom and maintain.
Other Styles
-
Buzz cuts do not only pertain to the whole head but can also be administered on the sides. On occasion, the sides are buzzed with an inch or two left on the top, to facilitate spiking. The whole head can also be buzzed with just bangs left at the front to give the ability to flip them up when styling.
