Factors to Consider When Buying a New Computer
Purchasing a new computer can be a daunting task, especially if you don't know what to look for. Before being convinced by a salesperson to purchase the latest and greatest computer system -- which will probably be obsolete by the end of the year -- make a list of your computing needs. These needs will guide you toward the ideal computer.
-
Style
-
Computers intended for personal use come in two different styles: desktops and laptops. Desktop computers are ideal for those who only want to use their computer at home. Desktop computers can also be linked to your television, allowing you to watch movies, surf the Web, and listen to music. Laptop computers offer the same features as desktop computers but are portable, making them ideal for those who wish to work outside of their home. The intended use of the computer is a major factor. For example, those who do graphic design might purchase a desktop with multiple monitors, while those who only use computers for Internet surfing and basic functions could purchase a laptop. Fully loaded desktop computers are generally cheaper than fully loaded laptops.
Mac Versus PC
-
Justin Long is known as an actor to some, and as a "Mac" to others after he filmed a series of commercials describing the benefits of being -- and using -- a Mac, compared to a PC. While both Macs and PCs ultimately perform the same tasks, consumers may find the Mac easier to use. One reason is the toolbar or "dock" at the bottom of a Mac screen, allowing users to easily access desired applications. Mac computers -- both desktops and laptops -- are designed exclusively by Apple. This results in a higher price tag. PCs are designed by multiple companies, and that competition factor equates to a lower starting price on average. Video game enthusiasts will find a wider range of titles for a PC than they would a Mac. However, PCs are more prone to viruses than Macs.

Remember Memory
-
The more memory a computer has, the more programs it will be able to operate at once. Before purchasing a computer, foresee which programs you'd want to use and check the required memory. Make sure the computer has enough built-in memory -- or RAM -- to handle the program. Computerhope.com recommends purchasing a computer with at least 512MB of memory. Computers with at least 2GB of memory or more are ideal for those who wish to install a lot of programs to use at once. Added memory will also enable the computer to run at a faster speed.
The Port and Beyond
-
Computers with multiple USB ports are ideal, but all computers should have at least one USB port. These ports will allow you to insert flash drives or external hard drives so you can back up important information in the event of a computer crash. Desktop computers are typically sold with a mouse and keyboard included. However, you can upgrade to wireless versions of both. Once the right computer is chosen, the monitor becomes the most important factor. Purchase at least a 19-inch monitor for gentle viewing and less strain on your eyes.
