A country-style bedroom reflects the decor of a quaint country home.

Decorating your home in a country style allows you to give it a traditional look that dates back centuries. A country-style bedroom can take you back to a time when life was, in many ways, simpler and people made their own home furnishings and decor. The right colors, bedding and furniture will help you achieve this look in your bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Colors

    • The colors typically used in a country bedroom are those that are soft and light. In particular, different shades of white are common for the base color, although variations such as beige and cream are sometimes used in place of white. Accents include a variety of earthy colors, such as pale tones of blue and green. Other potential colors include browns and pinks. The overall effect of the colors should be light and airy; any colors used should complement each other.

    Furniture

    • The furniture that fits best into a country bedroom typically is made from wood and looks as though it may have been made by hand; this style often features rough-looking or antiqued edges. For example, wooden beds, dressers and nightstands that look as though they were made by hand fit well with a country theme. Natural woods that are light in color or that have been painted a light color are best. You can also use a bed that has a headboard and foot board made of metal rails. Antique pieces, such as a table, chest or bench, can add to the country tone of the bedroom and serve as storage as well.

    Bedding

    • Your bedding is one of the most important elements of creating a country look to your bedroom. Select types of bedding that complement the style. A hand-made quilt or a fluffy down comforter placed on top of the bed are both country accents. If you are looking to add a truly old-fashioned feel to the bedroom, use antique linen sheets on the bed rather than newer cotton versions.

    Decor

    • Even if you are using furniture that does not fit a country style, you can still give your bedroom a country feel. Hang pictures in the room that reflect country scenes and use frames that are primitive in design. Display antique-looking accents. Remove modern handles from your dressers and nightstands and replace them with handles that look rustic or antique; dark-colored bronze or brass handles fit the look well. Cover the tops of the dressers and nightstands with lace doilies. Remove any carpeting from the floor and set out area rugs on hardwood flooring instead.
