Fun Things a Farmer Gets to Ride On
Big equipment is a major part of life on any farm. Farmers use machinery to push, pull and move things around their farms, as well as to help them get big jobs done. While the tractor is maybe the most well known piece of equipment, there are other pieces that keep life on the farm going as well.

Swather
-
A swather is a large piece of equipment the farmer attaches to the back of a tractor to cut grass and alfalfa. The swather also crimps the stems of the grass and alfalfa after cutting so that the stems can dry faster. After the swather finishes cutting, it leaves what it has cut in long rows, making it easier for the farmer to collect it into bales of hay.
Baler
-
A baler is used to gather up the grass or alfalfa that the swather has cut and lined up. Once the baler scoops up all of the grass, it forms it into bales of hay by compressing the grass together and then tying it with a string. There are balers that make round bales of hale as well as balers that make squares.

Loader
-
A loader is great help around the farm for moving large items that can't be easily picked up. The loader has a large arm with a bucket at the front of it that can pick things up like dirt. The arm then moves up and down to be able to unload the dirt as well. When a farmer puts a large spike on the front of the bucket, she can pick up and transport hay bales without the bales falling apart.
Tractor
-
The tractor is maybe the best known piece of farm equipment. Not only does the tractor help the farmer get around the farm, it can also be used to pull a number of useful items around the farm. The tractor pulls the swather when the grass needs to be cut. It also pulls the large, circular rake that is sometimes needed to rearrange the grass before it can be baled.
