Take your small children to the petting zoo on the weekend.

When you have two small children your weekends can be quite adventurous. It is important to find fun things to do as a family on the weekend so that your young ones do not grow restless and cranky. Weekend activities also give you a chance to spend quality time together. When you think about what types of activities to do consider the age of your children and go with the choices that will be the most stimulating and appropriate.

  1. Children's Petting Zoo

    • The children's petting zoo is a place where small kids get up close to the animals, and can even pet and ride them. The animals at a petting zoo are not as exotic as the ones you find at the regular zoo. Rather than having lions and tigers, the petting zoo has llamas, goats, sheep and ponies. These are gentle animals that are used to human contact. For some family fun, let your kids take an animal ride if they are old enough. Or, go on a hay ride as a family. Your kids can even feed some of the animals with special feed. Find a wild-animal sanctuary or hospital as they are usually free of charge but do appreciate a donation.

    Botanical Gardens

    • At the botanical gardens your young children will enjoy seeing and smelling colorful plants and flowers. Sometimes the Botanical Gardens hosts butterfly exhibits, which are enjoyable for small kids. It's not appropriate to spend all afternoon at the Botanical Gardens, because your kids may grow restless, but giving them exposure to the different flowers and creatures can be fun for a couple of hours. Many are built around lakes or ponds where paddle boats are available for rent and picnic pavilions abound.

    Playground

    • The playground offers a host of fun activities for small children and their parents. Swings, slides, see-saws and sandboxes are entertaining and will wear your kids out after a couple of hours. Conclude your playground adventures with a picnic in the grass. Prepare snacks and juice boxes for your small children to enjoy. Or, if the ice cream man is nearby, pick up an icy cold treat for your family. Some playgrounds are build near duck ponds, so be sure to save old loaves of "duck bread" to bring along on such occasions, or pick up an inexpensive kite at the drugstore.

    Camping

    • A weekend camping trip is an effective way to have fun as a family. Select a weekend forecasted for nice weather and pick your camping destination. Make sure you have all the essential camping and kid gear. You will need activities to keep your kids entertained on the drive to the camp site and while you are out in the wilderness. Bring along coloring books, sticker books and games that your young kids enjoy playing. Have them participate in the camping adventures by singing camp fire songs and roasting smores.

    Movie Theater

    • Going to the movies is an ideal way for the family to spend a rainy afternoon on the weekend, or to keep cool on a hot summer day. If you have small children, take them to see an age appropriate movie where there are sure to be other kids of similar age. Stock up on popcorn and movie theater goodies to enjoy during the show.
