Bathtub Caulk Remover Tools
Bathtub caulking is essential for sealing the gap between the bathtub and the wall. Caulk makes the joint watertight, and it prevents moisture from forming mold and mildew in the wall. Whether you want to replace your bathtub or simply need to replace a cracked or chipped caulk line, you will need several specialized tools to effectively remove the caulk. Does this Spark an idea?

Caulk Softener
-
Before you can remove the caulk, you should first soften it. There are many caulk removers on the market, most of which you can purchase at your local hardware store. Find a product that is made up of isopropyl rubbing alcohol, which should work on most caulks. If you have silicon-based caulk, use a softener that contains sodium or potassium hydroxide. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully when using it, however, as it could burn or stain your wall or tub.
Utility Knife
-
A utility knife is an essential tool for tackling the job of removing caulk from around your bathtub. After you've softened the caulk, use a knife with a new blade to slice and remove the caulk. You should be able to cut away most of the caulk this way.

Needle-Nose Pliers and Five-in-One Tool
-
Like a utility knife, a needle-nose pliers is something that you probably already have in your toolbox. After you slice away most of the caulk with the utility knife, pull out any stuck pieces with the pliers. You can then scrape away any remaining pieces of caulk with a painter's five-in-one tool, which has a hook end that is perfect for scraping.
Cleaning Tools
-
Before you can finish your removal project and apply a new caulk line, you need to remove any mold or mildew that penetrated the caulked area. Dip a paintbrush into a nonammonia bath cleaner or oxygen bleach. Scrub away the mildew with the paintbrush. After you have removed the mildew, run a clean cloth into the gap where you removed the caulk in order to dry the area.
