The Best Work Jeans

Denim jeans are very versatile and can be dressed up to suit a work environment.

Denim jeans are well known as comfortable clothing, but this doesn't mean that they can't also be smart. Traditionally, jeans have had a reputation for being too casual for the workplace, but now there are cuts and styles to suit many occasions. Many companies that require employees to dress formally also have "casual days" when employees are permitted to dress in more comfortable clothing. Some studies have even shown that casual days improve morale and productivity.

  1. Styles to Avoid

    • Denim jeans are an excellent choice for work attire, because they are comfortable and can be worn with a nice shirt and shoes. However, certain styles of jeans may be deemed inappropriate in the work place. Jeans that have rips, holes, studs and embroidery may be trendy outside of work, but in the office they're out of place.

    Color

    • A dark wash is the best option for work because darker denim colors -- navy blue and nearly black -- are a similar color to most dress pants. Distressed denim or jeans that are a lighter wash can be worn in very relaxed work environments, but avoid them if you want to look polished and professional.

    Cut

    • Boot-cut denim jeans are the best cut to wear to work. They flatter all body shapes, sit at an appropriate level on the hips and are a smart and simple shape. Low-rise jeans are not appropriate because they show off too much skin, and skinny jeans or jean leggings are too sexy. Select jeans that skim the body comfortably, not too baggy or too tight.

    Length

    • Women should wear full-length jeans, not Capri length, even during hot weather. Offices are air conditioned, and most companies frown on anything that looks as if you're on your way to a picnic or the beach.

    Your Outfit

    • If you wear jeans to the office, pair them with a crisp, solid-color shirt and a blazer or cardigan, or wear a turtleneck or crewneck sweater. A solid-color T-shirt under a blazer is acceptable. Wear leather shoes, not sneakers.
