Determining which alcohol that goes into which beverage can be confusing for the inexperienced drink-maker. While a straight-forward drink order like scotch and soda is self-explanatory, drinks with ambiguous names like screwdriver or Manhattan are not as easy. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Vodka

      Popular vodka drinks include the martini, Bloody Mary and the screwdriver. The martini mixes vodka and vermouth while the "dirty" martini adds olive brine to the mix. The Bloody Mary contains vodka, tomato juice and Worcestershire sauce with salt and pepper to taste. For the screwdriver, pour vodka and orange juice on ice.

      Tequila is a favorite shot drink, but the margarita in all its variations is even more popular. The margarita comes in classic and frozen variations. The classic margarita contains tequila, triple sec, lime juice and a lime wedge. Blending all that with ice creates the frozen version. The Tequila Sunrise mixes tequila and orange juice over ice with a splash of grenadine.

    Rum

      Because of its Caribbean roots, many rum-based drinks have a tropical flavor. Use frozen limeade concentrate blended with rum for the classic frozen lime daiquiri. Mix coconut milk, pineapple juice, rum and white sugar with ice in the blender for the pina colada. A fresh mojito helps beat the heat with a blend of rum and carbonated water, adding a touch of confectioners' sugar, lime and mint.

    Whiskey

      Classic whiskey cocktails include the Manhattan, the whiskey sour and the Old Fashioned. Pour whiskey over a combination of simple syrup, water, bitters and ice to create an Old Fashioned. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry. For a Manhattan, shake sweet vermouth, whiskey and bitters with ice. The whiskey sour combines simple syrup, whiskey and lemon juice over ice.
