Diorama Ideas About the Rainforests

A diorama can depict the habitat and wildlife of a rainforest.

With a diorama, you can teach others about the rainforests. A diorama is a three-dimensional model. You can build it inside of a box or container, or on top of a flat surface. Rainforests have an abundant variety of wildlife, trees and vegetation that you can include in your model. Use modeling materials such as clay, paper mache or plaster to build three-dimensional objects in your diorama. Paint or color the background of the container with paint, markers or crayons. You can also use cardboard cutouts, photographs and labels to explain what happens in the rainforest environment.

  1. Types

    • There are two types of rainforests: tropical and temperate. Tropical rainforests, located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, are warm and moist. Temporate rainforests are also lush and wet, but are found in cooler regions. Make a diorama that compares and contrasts both types. Include information about the locations where each type is found. Research interesting facts about the rainforests to use as ideas for your diorama. (See Resources)

    Environment

    • Depict the biodiversity of the rainforest environment. You could make a diorama that shows a broad overview of the abundant life found in the rainforest. Include a variety of wildlife such as birds, mammals, insects and reptiles. Describe the five layers of the rainforests: overlay, canopy, understory, shrub and ground layers. Place the wildlife in the layers where they are typically found. Another approach is to create a diorama that focuses on one type of creature, such as butterflies of the rainforests.

    Importance

    • Rainforests are important. They help maintain the Earth's water cycle. Rainforests add moisture from the leaves to the atmosphere. Rain clouds form and release the water to the ground. Make a diorama that depicts the water cycle. Use labels and arrows to show the cycle. Rainforests are also important because they provide medicinal plants. You could build a diorama that depicts the plants that are sources of medicines.

    Threats

    • Rainforests are threatened by human activities. For example, clear-cutting of trees for firewood and timber, and slash-and-burn techniques by farmers have destroyed many rainforests. Make a diorama that teaches people about the threats to rainforests. Collect photographs of damaged rainforests to place in the background of the container. Compare and contrast a healthy rainforest with a damaged area. You could also include some solutions, such as using recycled or tree-free paper, or practicing sustainable logging.
