The Mardi Gras float is a star attraction during a parade.

Floats take center stage in Mardi Gras parades. Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is the official start of Lent. In keeping with the season's celebrations, Mardi Gras floats can be elaborate, colorful and festive. Ideas for floats can run the gamut, taking inspirations from movie and television characters, animals, holidays and popular culture.

  1. Movies

    • Model a Mardi Gras float on a movie. For a float based on a science fiction movie, such as "Star Wars," create props featuring spaceships, planets, moons and stars. Each rider on the float should purchase "Star Wars" Halloween costumes to wear. Buy toys based on the movie, such as laser guns and lightsabers. Give the toys to each of the riders to carry on the float.

    Creatures and Animals

    • Fictional creatures or animals, such as Big Foot, King Kong, dragons and the Loch Ness monster, make a striking presence on floats. People riding on the float should wear costumes relating to the theme. For a King Kong theme float, create the New York City downtown skyline. Make King Kong the center of attention, towering over every other element of the float. Also, include helicopters, police cars and fire trucks. Those who ride on the float should wear New York City police and firefighters costumes.

    Holidays

    • There are 20 official national holidays celebrated each year, plus numerous unofficial holidays including Kwanzaa, Ramadan and St. Patrick's Day. Create a float based on a holiday. A Christmas Day float can be decorated with Christmas trees, lights, wreaths and other holiday decorations. Buy Santa Claus costumes for each rider to wear.

    Current Events

    • Make a float featuring a replica of the White House and national monuments in Washington, D.C. Pick two riders to serve as President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The other riders on the float should pose as Secret Service agents, dressed in dark suits and sunglasses.
