What Is a WordPerfect Document?
A WordPerfect document is the native file format for the WordPerfect word processing software. The file extension may take different formats depending on which version of WordPerfect the document was saved in, and older versions of WordPerfect for the Mac had a different extension than WordPerfect for Windows. Certain kinds of WordPerfect documents are compatible with Microsoft Word.

WordPerfect Software
-
WordPerfect is a word processing program owned by Corel, and it comes as part of Corel's office suite, WordPerfect Office X4. The office program is roughly comparable to Microsoft Office, with several graphics and document processing programs, but comes with a lower price tag.
File Formats
-
The native file format for WordPerfect documents is WPD, though versions 4 and 5 of WordPerfect saved natively in WP4 and WP5, respectively. WordPerfect versions 2.0 to 3.5 for the Mac use the format WPM. In addition to this native format, WordPerfect can save files in the common PDF, RTF and TXT formats, as well as a host of less common file formats.

Compatibility
-
For users going for universal compatibility, WordPerfect can save in the Open Document Format (ODF). Files in Microsoft Word DOC and DOCX formats can be opened in WordPerfect, making it easy for Microsoft Office users to convert to WordPerfect without losing their files. Additionally, you can open WPD files in Microsoft Office by selecting the WordPerfect file type from the "Files of Type" drop-down menu in the Open File window.
Limitations
-
The WPD format does not support graphic-heavy documents and documents with a lot of tables; these elements are not exported when a file is saved as WPD. Additionally, if you try to open a DOC file with a lot of graphic or table information, you will likely get an "Unknown file format" message.
