A good location will add to the element of surprise.

Surprise parties are fun for everyone involved. The party can be for a birthday, anniversary, graduation or any other event worthy of celebration. A large part of the planning depends on where to have the party. Choose a locale that will allow you to set up and decorate without being discovered by the guest of honor -- a challenging but not impossible task. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. A Friend's House

    • It will be easier to set up and decorate for a surprise party if it is held at the house of a friend. This way the person who is to be surprised will have no inkling of what is to come. Luring the person to the house will not feel suspicious or give away the intended event, because it is a place the guest of honor would normally visit.

    The Person's Home

    • This location requires more planning and secrecy than any other but can offer up more surprise. Party planners will need to distract the person and get him to leave his home long enough for the setup and decorating. Usually this location is best pursued by someone who lives in the house or a family member who has keys and natural access.

    A Restaurant Private Dining Room

    • Reserving a private room in a restaurant can be a terrific surprise. You can invite the guest of honor to dinner at the restaurant, only to open up the doors of a private room and surprise her with a group of family and friends. The downside of this location is that the person will know that you are taking her out for the occasion, but having additional friends and family appear with a chorus of "Surprise!" should make up for that.

    A Sporting Venue

    • A sporting arena brings another element of fun to the occasion. Bowling alleys, ice-skating rinks or miniature golf courses are venues that usually offer party packages. You can then enjoy a recreational activity while celebrating your special event.

    The Person's Workplace

    • A surprise party in an office or workplace offers several planning options. You can wait until the person has gone to lunch and then decorate, or stay behind on the day before and decorate after the guest of honor leaves, so that he is surprised when he comes in the next morning. Decorate his desk or workspace, or hold a celebration in the conference room after bringing him in under the guise of a meeting.
