Masquerade balls first became popular in 15th century Italy as a means of celebration among the rich, and then spread to Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, masquerades are fun events that involve several different types of masks. For those who are trying to get into the spirit, the key is the type of mask you choose or create.

Masquerade masks that cover just the eyes can range from the basic to the extravagant. If you want to play it safe, eye masks with a shimmery fabric front are always a classy choice. To spice it up, use a mask in a different shape -- butterfies, kittens and other animals are common options. If you want a more unique look, buy an eye mask that is pre-painted with one of a variety of different designs.
Carnival-Style Masks

Carnival-style masks involve more complex shapes and decorations. Masks with intricate patterns around the eyes are a good start.
