Fun and Easy Outdoor Wooden Projects
Yards, decks, patios and porches are great places to decorate with handcrafted wooden items. Adults and children get a great deal of satisfaction out of creating these items themselves. This is also a good way to save money on the finished project. Easy wooden projects are fun to build in a weekend and there are more projects other than just birdhouses, planters and window boxes you can make yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Garden Obelisk
-
Train bougainvillea on your garden obelisk. Basic carpentry skills are the only requirement for completing this architectural plant support. The top of this structure is a pointed spire on a square base. The base is cut on two opposite sides to make space for one set of 2-by-2 pieces of 8-foot long pieces of pressure-treated lumber to be attached. This four-legged tower is reinforced by lathe run vertically on each face and set crosswise at 15-inch intervals. The four legs of the obelisk are braced near the base by 2-by-4 pieces attached horizontally. The garden obelisk may be set in a large planter or set in a garden space for annual floral vines to climb.
Grill Buddy
-
A grill side-cart is handy for a cookout. Every grill master needs a place to set their platters, sauces, condiments and tools. This 3-foot tall cart is constructed from pressure treated lumber and boasts a full top and bottom shelf. The cart is set on casters for easy mobility and has an extension on one side of the top shelf for a handle and towel-hanging space.

Yard and Garden Stakes
-
Try a garden stake to label your vegetable rows. Add a whimsical touch to your garden or lawn with a creative stake you craft yourself. The bases of these stakes are 1/2-inch dowels cut to the height you desire. A 1-inch wooden cube is drilled to set on the dowel and a cutout of your choosing is attached to the cube. Create a simple flower that turns in the wind out of large craft sticks -- imagine large ice pop sticks. Cut 4 craft sticks in half and cut the corners of the flat end at 45 degree angles. The craft sticks or petals are painted yellow and a black, permanent marker is used to make 1/8-inch marks on the edge of each craft stick. Four petals are glued around a drilled hole on the face of the 1-inch cube. The other four petals are glued on top of the first four, each petal fitted between the previous layer petals. Attach the petal unit with a 1/4-inch dowel and affix a small wooden circle which is painted brown to hold the flower together. Once the flower assembly is dry, glue the wooden cube to the prepared dowel with contact cement.
Hanging Windows
-
A chain with smaller links is an attractive support for an old window. Pick up an old paned window from a yard sale, antique store or from the side of the road. Sand off some of the paint and attach a small chain to two eye hooks attached about 3 inches in from each top corner of the unit. Hang a window pane on each end of a pergola, arbor or trellis to simulate a room-like atmosphere in your yard.
