Five Defense Techniques
Self-defense techniques are useful to know in the event of an attack. When employing these techniques, it is important to utilize the element of surprise and target vulnerable areas on the body. For a person interested in learning about self-defense, there are several simple methods that don't require formal training.
-
Prevention
-
Prevention is always the first and most important self-defense technique. Stay away from potentially dangerous situations. Don't walk through dark alleys or travel alone in areas with a high crime rate. Don't accept food, alcohol or gifts from strangers. Stay aware of all surroundings and keep a guard up when in unfamiliar or uncomfortable situations.
Kicking
-
Kicking an assailant in sensitive and susceptible parts of the body is a useful self-defense technique. When standing, find a way to kick the attacker in the knee or groin area. If lying down, lift the knee and kick the attacker in the groin area. If the attacker is down, but seems ready to try another attack, kick the assailant in the throat area or any other painful pressure point.

Eye Gouge
-
An eye gouge is an effective self-defense technique which causes an attacker enough pain and disorientation to allow time for a safe escape.. If an attacker is close, simply thrust the fingers as deep into the attacker's eye socket as possible. When employing this technique, move with speed and without hesitation. The eye gouge typically results in the attacker losing vision and control of the situation.
Palm Heel Strike
-
A palm heel strike is an effective self-defense technique which is simple to perform. A palm heel strike delivered in an upward motion to the nose will cause some pain and the eyes to water. A palm heel strike delivered to the chin will force the attacker's head backwards and cause the assailant to stumble. Deliver the strike repeatedly until the attacker gives up or there's a chance to escape.
Finger Break
-
Finger breaking is a technique which may seem cruel, but is effective and may possibly save a life. When a person is not able to employ other techniques but has a hand free, quickly grasp one or two of the attacker's fingers and swiftly thrust them in the upward position. Keep the fingers in the upward position until the bones break. Complete the move quickly for optimal effectiveness. The finger-breaking technique disables the use of one of the attacker's hands and throws the assailant off balance.
