Jobs for Older People

More seniors are finding it necessary to work past their retirement age. Cost of living expenses are at an all time high and people are living longer than ever before. Post-retirement jobs may supplement an older person's income as well as provide a social outlet. Jobs that require little training are ideal for seniors just looking to fill the time or add to a fixed income.

  1. Grocery Clerks

    • Grocery stores generally offer employment to every age group. Older people help fill a gap in the schedule --- teenagers typically work the afternoon shift, leaving the morning shift available for seniors. The job usually consists of bagging groceries, performing price checks and helping customers to their cars. You may also have the responsibility of finding stray carts or straightening store shelves. In most cases pay is minimum wage or slightly above.

    Retail Stores

    • Retail stores offer positions like store greeters or janitorial positions that can be filled with a few part-time employees. You just need general skills and enjoy working with the public. Stores like Walmart, K-mart and Target are all places to consider if you're seeking employment.

    Companion or Homemaker

    • Older people looking for part-time work may enjoy being a companion or homemaker for the elderly or disabled. You may obtain a job through an agency or provide your services privately. Duties consist of running errands, making doctors visits and light housekeeping. This can be a rewarding job that serves the purpose of helping a person stay in his own home longer.

    Volunteerism

    • Seniors who don't have a financial need and have time on their hands may consider volunteering. Hospitals, schools and libraries are all venues that appreciate and are supported by volunteerism. Contact your local Retired and Senior Volunteer Program or RSVP for volunteer opportunities near you.
