Exterior Paint Color
-
Create visual effects with a simple coat of paint. The right color of paint can accomplish incredible visual effects, tricking even the human eye to see something that's not there. For instance, you can update the entire look of your home just by painting the roof a darker color, as opposed to the house itself. This gives the home a cleaner line and makes it appear lower to the ground. And, if you'd like to make your home appear larger than it really is, choose light, pale or more neutral colors, including white, beige and pastels.
Accentuate the Positive
-
Bring out the best features of your home with a bright, bold color. Take time to examine your home; walk the perimeter. Whether it is the shutters, gables, roofing or a deck, select those features of the house that you would like to stand out, as well as those that you would like to make a little less noticeable. For example, paint your front door a bright, bold color that is complementary to the exterior color of your home--think red. With accentuating those positive features of your home with a sharp coat of color, your home will no longer be the wallflower of the neighborhood. The same is true of those features you are not too fond of. By blending them in with the same color as your home, you are subtly masking the features you consider an eyesore, making them less obvious.

Complementary Colors
-
Carefully consider the combination of color that you use to paint your home. Color combination can say a lot about your home, as well as your sense of style. So take your time when choosing the right colors and be sure to sample them before you dive in. For instance, if you are painting an eggshell white on the exterior, consider using a rich, bold shade for the trim and accent features, including hunter green. Also, if your home was built with partial brick, you'll want to consider how the paint color complements the brick. If you have pink brick, choose lighter color paints for the exterior, including white, beige and taupe.
Stick to Traditional Color Schemes
-
Don't pick colors that won't sell. While you want to make your house your own, avoid picking colors and color combinations that will make it hard for you to sell your house down the road. Stick to traditional color schemes and keep from having to repaint the house again just so that you can put it on the market.
