The Flathead Valley is home to Flathead Lake and an entrance to Glacier National Park.

The Flathead Valley is located in Northwest Montana and is home to the famous Flathead Lake as well as the western entrance to Glacier National Park. With mountains on three sides and the lake on the other, the Flathead Valley has much milder weather than other parts of Montana, making it a great location to hold a wedding ceremony.

  1. Northern Area

    • The northern section of the Flathead Valley is home to Kalispell, the seventh largest city in Montana. The close proximity of Glacier National Park makes that a very attractive location to hold a wedding ceremony. Kalispell has numerous hotels and motels and all the amenities of a larger city. This would be a nice place to have guests stay until it is time for the wedding rehearsal and ceremony.

To have a wedding ceremony in Glacier National Park, you will need to fill out an Application for Special Use Permit that you can print out from the Glacier National Park website.

    Western Area

    • The western side of the Flathead Valley is home to the cities of Elmo, Lakeside and Dayton. In this area you'll also find many public access points for Flathead Lake including boat launches, public waterfronts and parks along the lake. Home to acres and acres of the famous Flathead Lake cherry groves, this area becomes exceptionally beautiful during mid-spring when the cherry trees begin to bloom. Some good locations for a wedding ceremony are along the lake, in a public park or in a cherry grove. You will need to contact the property owner if you find a spot that isn't for public access.

    Eastern Area

    • The eastern section of the Flathead Valley is where you'll find Swan Lake and Woods Bay. Swan Lake is a very popular destination for Western Montana natives to go camping, fishing and hiking. Events are held there for holidays like the Fourth of July. The Mountain Lake Lodge and Flathead Lake Brewing Company are two places that allow wedding ceremonies and can give you a one-of-a-kind, Montana experience.

    Southern Area

    • The southern Flathead Lake Valley is home to Polson, the gateway to Flathead Lake, and the Flathead Indian Reservation. This area is rich in Native American culture and offers some alternative places to hold a wedding ceremony, including on the reservation itself. Some places to hold a wedding ceremony here are Public Flathead Lake access points and the historic town of St. Ignatius on the reservation.

    Considerations

    • The weather in Montana, while a tad more mild in the Flathead Valley, goes to extremes in the summer and winter. It's not uncommon to have three weeks above 90 degrees in the summer and large amounts of snow with below-zero temperatures in the winter. The best times to have a wedding ceremony are during the spring, early summer and fall. If you choose to have a summer or winter wedding, make sure everyone in attendance knows to pack accordingly.
