Halloween can be a time for great laughs.

Halloween may be synonymous with candies, goodies and goblins, but that does not mean everything has to be sugar-filled and spooky. From party planning to begging for candy, you can up the ante on your holiday fun by adding some hilarious pranks and antics. So, put the trick in "Trick or Treat" and try one of these humorous ideas this Halloween. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Costumes

    • Get a laugh and turn heads this Halloween with a creative and hilarious costume. One sure way is to use puns. For example, attach empty cereal boxes and sprinkle fake blood on your outfit. Be sure to wield a fake knife to complete your "cereal killer" look. Another idea is a "chip monk," or a monk carrying a bag of potato chips. You can also choose unconventional costumes. Inanimate objects, like tables, beer cans, vacuum cleaners and flashlights. Most of these costumes can be made at home with poster board, but you may also find versions at a costume party store.

    Jack-O'-Lanterns

    • Another way to garner laughs this Halloween is to change your pumpkin into a hilarious jack-o'-lantern. You can make the Halloween staple into a variety of facial expressions. For pumpkins with big goofy grins, remember to carve from the top down and be sure to leave enough room between the teeth and the tongue. You could also transform your pumpkins to resemble celebrities or political leaders, and exaggerate any prominent facial features. For example, a Barack Obama pumpkin should include big ears, and a Jay Leno look-alike would need to include a large chin.

    Ghost and Goblin Party

    • If a regular Halloween costume party is too boring for your party posse, mix it up with a Ghost and Goblins theme. This theme requires participants to dress up as either ghosts, goblins or other undead creatures. Award prizes to the party participants who come up with the most creative and hilarious costume. To keep the theme light and funny, use a touch of sophomoric humor. For example, serve punch with "graveyard cake," a chocolate cake with funny tombstones commemorating the lives of fake people like "Ben Dover" and "Seymour Butts."

    Trick-or-Treating Scarecrow Scare

    • Treats are assumed when children visit neighborhood homes, but you can have some harmless fun too. One funny prank is to make a scarecrow and place him in the front lawn or on your front porch at least a month before Halloween. On the night of trick-or-treating, dress up in the same costume and take the scarecrow's place. When unsuspecting costumed children come calling, jump out and scare.
