Founded by Katsumi Yanagisawa, the company originally began making music stands and within four years turned to drum manufacturing. The Masterworks drum set series is considered Pearl's chief drum line. They are not mass produced but are hand crafted to each individual's specifications. You have the ability to hand pick every material that is used in creating the drum set, making each set unique. Pearl offers many options for its customizing, including the type of wood used, shell ply, drum hardware and a wide variety of finishes. Product orders are made through Pearl directly. Because of the specialized nature of these products, the production time is usually longer; it can take up to six months to complete an order.

Pearl's premium concert or orchestra snare drum is the Philharmonic Snare Drum. The drum shell is made from solid maple and consists of one ply which produces a balance of high and mid-tone ranges. The Philharmonic features a unique snare adjustment system called the SR-500 Triad Strainer. This system is made up of 3 individual snare adjusters, allowing for the ultimate concert performance tuning. The snare drum comes in two finishes; Piano Black or High Gloss Walnut Bordeaux and is available in two sizes: 14-by-5 inches and 14-by-6.5 inches. All Philharmonic Snare Drums come with Remo Renaissance Heads.

PBA Bass Drum

Pearl's superior bass drum line is the PBA Philharmonic Concert Bass Drum. This bass drum offers a low, rich, full-bodied tone. The drum shells are made from 4-ply African mahogany wood, which produces a lower tone than birch or maple. The shells are wrapped by 4-ply maple reinforcement hoops and have rounded full bearing edges. Pearl's Silent Tensioning Lug System allows quick and easy tuning of the instrument. PBA Bass Drums have a Matte Walnut Lacquer finish and are available in a number of sizes: 28-by-14 inch, 32-by-16 inch, 36-by-16 inch and 36-by-18 inch. The PBA Bass drums come with Remo NuSkyn Heads.
FFXP-1412 Snare Drum

Pearl's premiere marching or pipe snare drum is the FFXP-1412. This snare drum has a full free-floating shell that is made from 4-ply birch or maple with an aluminum edge ring. The birch shell produces a brighter tone than the maple shell but both feature an accurately cut snare bed, providing the ultimate attack in snare response. The snare drum also has unique chrome-plated snare stands which prevent the drum from resting directly on the snares while sitting. Available in 14-by-12 inch only, the drum has a variety of lacquer finishes to choose from including white, black, red, teal blue or Emerald Mist.
