You can run iTunes on any Mac or Windows PC that meets the basic requirements.

You can download iTunes software onto any brand of PC, but that computer must meet certain hardware and software requirements. iTunes works in Windows environments as well as on Macs, but is not compatible with other operating systems such as Linux. iTunes is created by Apple, and thus is more stable in a Mac environment, but many Windows users operate the software without any trouble.

  1. Windows Software Requirements

    • Windows-based PCs must have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or later, or be running 32- or 64-bit versions of Windows Vista or 7. However, the 64-bit versions require a different download, called the 64-bit installer, to run properly. You also need a compatible version of QuickTime, but the iTunes download includes the latest version of this free software, so as long as you leave the QuickTime box checked on the download screen, you will have everything you need.

    Windows Hardware Requirements

    • Your PC must have 200 MB available on your hard disk drive for the program itself, plus you will need additional space to store your downloads as you make purchases. You also need a 1 GHz or higher processor chip made by Intel or AMD, but these are standard on most current PC models. The minimum RAM requirement is 512 MB, but more will help any video downloads run more smoothly; for HD video, you need at least 1 GB of RAM. HD video also requires more processing speed, with a minimum of a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo chip.

    Mac Personal Computer Requirements

    • Mac computers must also run a current version of QuickTime and have 200 MB of available hard disk space. Processor requirements are similar, but you can have a PowerPC G5 or G6 processor instead of the AMD or Intel versions. A current version of the Safari browser is also required for downloading iTunes on a Mac. As of March 2011, version 4.0.3 or higher is adequate. You will also need Mac OS X version 10.5 or newer. This may change to different versions with future iTunes releases.

    Requirements for All PCs

    • Any PC running iTunes requires a high-speed Internet connection, such as through a DSL or cable modem, and a 1024 by 768 or greater screen resolution. Apple also recommends a CD or DVD burner to back up your iTunes library.
