A well-designed and well-organized laundry room can make a boring chore more pleasant and help your home to function well. Adding cabinets to your laundry room can provide storage for laundry detergent and stain treatments, other cleaning products and even pantry storage space. The best laundry room cabinets are sturdy, durable and efficient.
You can opt for custom or stock cabinets for your laundry room, choosing colors and designs just for the utility room or matching them to your kitchen cabinetry. If you are hoping to add cabinets at a lower cost, you'll find affordable basic cabinetry at most home improvement stores. Laundry rooms can include floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, cabinets above the washer and dryer or top and bottom cabinets, leaving a counter surface for folding.
Cabinet cost in your laundry room typically depends upon the materials you choose. Melamine is the least expensive choice and can work well if your laundry room is in a garage, basement or another part of your home with minimal traffic. The surface is easy to clean but quite plain. Wood tone cabinets made of medium density fiberboard (MDF) are more expensive but often still an affordable choice. Real wood cabinetry is the most attractive choice but is a substantial investment.
Focus on function as you design your laundry room cabinets. Measure out the space in your laundry room and what you need to store. Take your cabinets all the way to the ceiling to store holiday decorations, bulk goods or out-of-season clothes. Taller cabinets can act as a coat or broom closet while pull-out cabinetry and narrow shelves make food storage easy. If you have a larger utility room, add both wall cabinets and an island to hold laundry baskets.
The best cabinets won't help your laundry room work well if you design your space poorly. Allow ample space to open the washing machine, whether you have a top loader or a front loader. If you expect to upgrade your appliances, choose a cabinet design that works with what you have now and what you plan to buy. Consider ironing needs, space to hang drying clothes and even flat drying racks when you plan your laundry room cabinets.
