A stencil can help you create a horse border in a room.

If your dreams often find you riding on the back of a horse with the wind in your hair, you may want to decorate a room in your house that features these beautiful hooved animals. A horse mural or border can help anchor a room around all things equine and provide day-dreaming fodder for horse-lovers of all ages. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Painted Barn Mural

    • Trompe l'oeil, a French term meaning "To fool the eye," is an art technique used to produce realistic three-dimensional imagery on a two-dimensional surface. Use this effect to create a dynamic and eye-popping horse mural for a bedroom, library or office. A half-open barn stall, with a horse head curiously poking out his head, makes a whimsical image. Paint a railing along a wall and paint a saddle draping over the fence or add a few scattered wildflowers along the bottom edge of the mural.

    Horse Mural Decal

    • If painting a mural is too much work for your busy schedule, opt for a peel-and-stick option. A horse-head wall decal will introduce a striking look to an otherwise plain room. Another choice is a simple, monochromatic scene of a trio of wild horses running wildly toward the viewer or a calm composition of a full-body horse silhouette. Measure twice and stick once -- many decals, once they attach to the wall, won't come off without being damaged or even completely destroyed.

    Stenciled Border

    • A horse stencil will help you create a quaint, quality design. Laser cut stencils depicting fiery steeds or jumping broncos can lend an old-fashioned charm to any room in the house. Stencil your horse border near the top of a room, where the wall meets the ceiling, or around the middle of a room, where the wainscoting begins. Choose a paint in a contrasting color and sponge over your stencil to create a mottled, country-like effect.

    Playing Cards Border

    • Find another use for your playing cards by stringing them up and hanging them in a mudroom, recreation room or den. Punch holes in the top two corners of horse-decorated playing cards. Purchase plenty of cards to decorate the perimeter of an entire room. Tie a double knot near the end of a long length of twine and thread a playing card, horse side-up, through one of the holes. Tie another double knot to secure the card and repeat this on the opposite side. Slide more playing cards onto the twine and tie them off, spacing them evenly throughout. When you're finished, secure the decoration with finishing nails around the perimeter of a room.
