Choose fun activities to keep the scouts interested and engaged.

Den activities are performed at the beginning of a Cub Scout meeting to get the boys interested and active. Always have some quick activities planned in case the kids get restless and need a break. Also plan some more in-depth activities that take a few meetings to accomplish, but are very rewarding to the scouts.

  1. The Cub Scout Race

    • Have each of the Cub Scouts build a race car out of a cardboard box. Their legs should be able to go through the bottom so they can run with the car. Use one pack meeting to allow the boys to design and build their cars and hold the race at the next meeting. Allow the boys to use any materials to make their cars. Format the race like a NASCAR event. Instruct each scout to pick one person for his pit crew and make him stop in between laps. Complete three laps. On their first pit stop the scouts drink a juice box. During the second stop, the racing scout eats a cookie or crackers. At the end of the third lap whoever gets to the finish line first wins.

    Balloon Game

    • The balloon game is a quick and easy activity that all the kids will enjoy. This is ideal if you have a lot of items on the agenda. Before the meeting, blow up one balloon per scout. Tie a balloon to each child's foot, then have the kids try to pop each other's balloons. Whoever is left with a balloon on his foot is the winner.

    Haunted House

    • For Halloween, have the den make a haunted house. Each child comes up with a plan for a room in the house. Or, if you have multiple dens, let each den come up with a part of the haunted house. Make sure you start this at least a month before Halloween. Talk about the project at a den meeting in September, have members choose what they want to do and give ideas. At the meeting before Halloween, have the kids go through their haunted house and get candy from each stop.

    Toilet Paper Mummies

    • Toilet paper mummies is another quick activity that makes a meeting more exciting. Break the scouts up into teams of two. One child becomes the mummy and the other is in charge of wrapping the mummy. Each team needs a roll of toilet paper. When you start the timer, the team member in charge of wrapping starts rolling his teammate in toilet paper. When the time stops see which mummy is covered with the most toilet paper. The team that who has the most-covered mummy is the winner.
