Problems With Uploading a Picture on Twitter

Your Twitter avatar shows alongside each of your tweets in timelines.

On Twitter, you have two places to add personality with your own image: your profile picture, known as an avatar, and your profile background. If you have trouble uploading an image, your issue may be related to its file type, its size or even the browser you're using. Twitter offers a number of suggestions for making your image upload process go smoothly.

  1. File Size

    • Your profile image must be between 48KB and 700KB in size, or Twitter will not accept it. Similarly, your background image size cannot exceed 800KB. If you're not sure how large your file is, right-click on it and choose "Properties." The file size appears next to "File Size." You can reduce an image's file size by using a graphic editing program, such as Paint or Photoshop, to reduce its dimensions and/or compress the file upon saving.

    Image Dimensions

    • If your profile image uploads successfully but appears distorted or cropped, this is a result of Twitter's automatic image shrinking process. You can avoid this problem by using an image editing program to resize your image into a square. When you upload a square profile picture to Twitter, it will retain its aspect ratio and not appear distorted.

    File Type

    • Both background and profile images must be JPG/JPEG, GIF or PNG files. Twitter does not support any other image files. If your picture is in an alternate format, such as a BMP, open it in your preferred graphics program and save it in one of the accepted formats.

    Browser

    • Twitter suggests updating your browser to the latest version if image uploading problems persist. Some older browsers may not handle the upload process correctly.

    Known Issue

    • Twitter has a known issue regarding uploading background images. If, after uploading a background image, you see a "Twitter is over capacity" message, or if you see a confirmation message despite your image not uploading, contact Twitter support for assistance. Try your upload at least twice before contacting support if possible.
