Established by the Florida state government, the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program includes three award levels -- Academic Scholars, Medallion Scholars and Gold Seal Vocational Scholars. The scholarships are intended to help Florida students cover some of the costs of attending college and award students with outstanding academic merit. To qualify for a Gold Seal Scholarship, students must fulfill several eligibility requirements.

Scholarship Features

The Gold Seal Scholarship goes to high school vocational students. Recipients receive up to 75 percent of tuition and fees for a public Florida postsecondary institution. Students attending a private Florida school will receive equal to the amount of 75 percent of tuition and fees for a comparable public school. Along with tuition money, students also receive a gold seal on their diploma, gold medallion and certificate.

Because the scholarship money comes from the Florida state government, to qualify students must first and foremost be U.S., and Florida, residents. Students must be high school graduating seniors involved in a vocational program at a high school or vocational school. The student’s parents must not be in default or have defaulted on any state or federal loan or grant programs.

Eligible applicants must have a high school grade point average of at least 3.0 or 3.5 for students enrolled in vocational classes. Students must have earned at least three vocational credits in job-preparatory or technology education programs and the credits must have been earned in the same career area. Other academic requirements include receiving a high school diploma or equivalent and earning a passing score of an 83 in reading and sentence skills and 72 in algebra on the Florida College Entry Level Placement Test. Students may also use their ACT or SAT scores to qualify.

Interested students must adhere to the scholarship application requirements as well by filling out the Initial Student Florida Financial Aid Application found online at the Florida Student Financial Aid website. To access the application, students must obtain their User ID and Pin Number through the Florida Department of Education. The application must be submitted sometime after December 1 and before high school graduation each year.

Gold Seal Scholarship recipients will automatically be considered for renewal of their award as long as the student maintains a 2.75 grade point average. Students receiving a full-time scholarship must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours a term, and part-time recipients must take six credit hours a term.
